c3 Days from $ USD 100.00
Overview
Experience the beauty of the Tambopata Natural Area with our 3-day Puerto Maldonado Tambopata Sandoval Lake & Monkey Island tour. This area is unique as it contains both lowland and foothill rainforests and connects to cloud forests at higher elevations.
Previously, very few people lived in Tambopata’s remote areas. However, conservationists realized the region’s potential as a major corridor between Manu National Park and Bolivia’s jungles. The area is also home to healthy populations of tapirs, jaguars, other felines, giant otters, harpy eagles, various macaws, and other animals that have disappeared from other parts of Amazonia. You can see a detailed page of our lodge by clicking here.

Afterward, visit the main square of the city and take pictures from Plaza Grau’s viewpoint, admiring the confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers. Next, board a typical Amazonian jungle boat at the Port of Capitania for a 40-minute navigation on the Madre de Dios River to our lodge. Once there, enjoy a welcome meeting with a delicious local fruit juice and settle into your rooms.
Activities: Canopy: Take a walk through the forest to the Canopy bridge, with a chance to spot various birds and learn about the fauna and flora of the area from your guide.
Zip-lining: After enjoying the canopy platform, learn how to do the zip line and slide down the 190-meter-long zip line, then cross a small bridge of 75 meters with the help of an assistant and return by another 160-meter-long zip line to the starting point.
Lunch: Enjoy a comforting lunch followed by a rest or a nap in the hammocks.
Kayak and Monkey Island: Put on your life jackets, board a boat, and transfer to the kayak for a refreshing paddle in the Madre de Dios River. There will always be a boat following the group for safety. Near the Amazon Garden Lodge, visit an island where a group of monkeys live. You can get close to them, feed them, and witness their interactions with other species.
Return to the Lodge: Return to Amazon Garden Lodge and relax in the afternoon with drinks from the bar, enjoying a majestic view of the Madre de Dios River from the hammocks. Witness the sunset in front of Monkey Island.
Safari Caiman: After dinner, board a boat with a reflector to observe caimans on the beaches, and you may also spot nocturnal birds and capybaras, the largest rodent in the world.

SANDOVAL LAKE.

After disembarking, we will take a short walk to reach the Lake Sandoval checkpoint, where you will register and present your entrance tickets to the Tambopata National Reserve. During the 3-kilometer hike, which will take approximately 45 minutes, you will have the opportunity to observe various flora and fauna, including birds, rodents, monkeys, arachnids, insects, reptiles, and amphibians.
Once we arrive at the lake, you can take a refreshing swim in its waters or simply relax and enjoy the stunning scenery. We will then have a delicious typical jungle lunch and take a paddle boat ride on the lake, where we may spot birds such as hoatzins, cormorants, anhingas, and the playful river otters that are a highlight of Lake Sandoval.
Later in the afternoon, we will leave the lake and return to the Madre de Dios River bank, where our boat will be waiting to take us back to AMAZON GARDEN LODGE. Dinner and rest will be provided for you.
PARROT CLAY LICK “LA CACHUELA”
We will depart from our ranch at 4:30 a.m. and head to the parrot clay lick via boat. During the 90-minute journey on the Madre de Dios River, we will be surrounded by diverse flora and fauna, including a variety of birds and a stunning sunrise.
At approximately 6:00 a.m., we will arrive at the parrot clay lick and position ourselves at a safe distance to await the arrival of various species of parrots, including macaws, blue-headed parrots, auroras, parakeets, and others. The clay lick contains mineral salts which the birds consume before engaging in their regular activities such as feeding on fruits, in order to neutralize toxins in their systems. This unique experience will last approximately an hour, providing ample time to capture stunning footage and views of these beautiful and interesting birds alongside a breathtaking jungle sunrise.
We will return to our lodge around 7:00 a.m. for our final breakfast before departing back to the city of Puerto Maldonado.
