Overview

Experience the beauty of Tambopata Natural Area on a 5-day jungle tour that includes Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, Sandoval Lake, and Monkey Island. This area is unique because it contains both lowland and foothill rainforests, as well as connects to cloud forests at higher elevations.

In the past, few people lived in Tambopata’s remote regions. However, conservationists realized that the region could act as a major corridor between Manu National Park and Bolivia’s jungles. The area also boasts healthy populations of tapirs, jaguars, felines, giant otters, harpy eagles, macaws, and other animals that have disappeared from other parts of Amazonia. You can stay in our lodge during the trip, and you can find more detailed information by clicking here.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Upper – Tambopata Natural Reserve

Upon arrival at the airport or bus station, we will transfer to our meeting point for a final briefing before departing for the Upper Tambopata Natural Reserve. For those with large backpacks, we will repack and store any unnecessary items, only bringing what is needed for the trip.

We will travel for approximately 2 hours by land, or more than 6 hours by river (just for information), to reach the banks of the Tambopata River. From there, we will take a boat to the Amazon Garden Campsite – Tambopata Lodge, where we will be welcomed and have breakfast or lunch, depending on the time of arrival.

In the afternoon, we will take an introductory walk into the rainforest, providing the opportunity to see animals in their natural habitat, such as amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and wonderful insects.

DAY 2

Macaw clay lick – Chuncho Upper Tambopata Natural Reserve

We will wake up very early at 4:30 am to embark on an incredible journey by boat to the world’s largest macaw clay lick, “El Chuncho.” The journey will take approximately 1.5 hours by boat, and along the way, we may spot some species such as capybaras, which are the world’s largest rodents, tapirs, and even the most beautiful South American feline, the jaguar. Many of our clients have been witnesses with photographic evidence of encounters with these beautiful mammals.

Upon arrival at the macaw clay lick, we will witness hundreds of parrots of different species (11) coming to eat clay adjacent to the river on the wall. We will sit in chairs and wait to witness one of the most beautiful natural sights of birds in the world. The parrots are followed by 3 species of the most colorful macaws of America, reds and greens, blues and yellows, coming together to eat clay needed for their daily diet and to eliminate toxins. On a good day of activity, we may see hundreds of these wonderful animals flying over us, an experience of a lifetime.

We will then return to Puerto Maldonado and the Amazon Garden Lodge, which will take us 1 hour, and provide us with bungalows to sleep. We will walk through the botanical garden where we can see some fruit, timber, and medicinal species in our area, in the company of our guide. This will provide us with more opportunities to observe the larger animals of the Tambopata Reserve. We will have the night off to rest or the possibility of another night walk.

DAY 3

Tambopata National Wildlife Reserve

After breakfast, we will visit a local jungle family and observe how they survive in the jungle. Then, we will take a two-hour guided hike through the dense tropical forest where you can witness the variety of trees that are more than five hundred years old, and see wild animals such as toucans, orioles, parrots, monkeys, snakes, butterflies, and more. This hike is within the TAMBOPATA NATIONAL WILDLIFE RESERVE, which spans 278,000 hectares and is protected.

After lunch, we will kayak to Monkey Island, located across the Madre de Dios River from our lodge, where you can spot different species of monkeys such as the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, and saddleback tamarin. In the evening, we will search for caimans, and you may be lucky enough to see white alligators on the sand banks of the Madre de Dios River with the help of a flashlight.

DAY 4

Lake Sandoval (piranha habitat)

After breakfast, we will embark on a 3 km walk through the dense rainforest towards Lake Sandoval, one of the largest bodies of water in the Tambopata National Reserve and home to piranhas. Once we reach the lake, we will board a rowing boat and observe a variety of bird species such as shansho cormorants, jacanas, puma herons, buzzards, howler monkeys, brown capuchin monkeys, tamarins, and sloths. With luck, we may even encounter the family of giant river otters, a species that is sadly endangered.

After our boat tour, we will return to the lodge for a typical lunch. In the evening, we will have another opportunity to go for a walk and observe the diverse range of nocturnal animals, including insects, amphibians, and reptiles. We will end the day with dinner and rest.

DAY 5

Green Parrot Clay lick(Cachuela)

In the early morning at 5:30 a.m., we will embark on a short walk to reach our canopy walkway, which is situated about 30 meters above the ground. This will provide us with a unique opportunity to observe nature from a great height, and we will also be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. On the platforms, we will have the chance to spot various species of birds, such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, and orioles, which will undoubtedly make for a breathtaking experience. After breakfast, we will head back to the city and arrange for airport or bus station transfers.
